About this book
Heroines of the Modern Stage is by Forrest Izard. The preface says the pages give some account of those actresses who stand out today as the most interesting to an English-speaking reader. The preface adds that the Continental actresses included are those who gained international reputations and belonged to the English and American stage almost as much as to their own.
The book tells how Miss Rehan, during the 1888 tour, played Katherine at Stratford-on-Avon, where her portrait in that rôle was hung in the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. The book records a Viola acted for London in January, 1894, which was new to the repertoire, and says Twelfth Night ran for one hundred and eleven performances. The book says a woman has made it her habit to live quietly near Trouville, on the Normandy coast, whenever her engagements permitted, with her daughter Germaine and her son Jacques.
