Nooks and Corners of English Life, Past and Present is by John Timbs. The preface says that pictures of the domestic manners of our forefathers, at some of the most attractive periods of English History, form the staple of the present volume. The preface says that these pictures are supplemented by sketches of subordinate scenes and incidents which illustrate great changes in Society.
A quoted description of the southern parts of England says that copper and bits of iron, according to weight, served as money. The text says it has been calculated that ten tons of pins are made every week in England alone, requiring from fourteen to fifteen tons of brass-wire. The text reports that an old sewer opened for repair in Rea-street, Birmingham, had a deposit with a vast number of pins embedded in it.
