About this book
The preface sets out an account of educational provision from the Introduction of Christianity to the Eve of the Reformation. The account describes monastic communities of men or women who left the outer world and dedicated their lives to worship and praise. Physical or mental labour appears as a special obligation of these communities.
The discussion of intellectual labour assigns some members the instruction of children and community members who still needed education. Other members worked in the scriptorium, taught singing, or prepared the musical part of monastic services. The university discussion records a dispute over confirmation of the chancellor's election that arose in 1288 and recurred with successive elections.
