About this book

A History of English Literature is by Robert Huntington Fletcher. The preface says the book aims to provide a general manual of English Literature for students in colleges and universities and others beyond the high-school age. The text gives a description it calls exceptionally beautiful, to be sure, from the story Kilhwch and Olwen: the maid was clothed in a robe of flame-colored silk, with a collar of ruddy gold about her neck.

The text says of the Roman conquest and occupation of Britain (England and Wales) that it needs only brief mention, since it produced virtually no effect on English literature. The text says Cato was a main cause of a famous quarrel between Addison and Pope. A list of editions gives, among others, Béowulf in a prose translation by Child and a metrical translation by J. L. Hall.
