About this book
A London sculptor's studio brings together artists, unwelcome visitors and a father searching for his daughter. Arthur Gervaise guards a clay figure of Psyche and explains to his friend Warren how a painted landscape can suggest a human form. Waterfield's admiration turns into intrusive demands, while a servant called William receives Thomas, a weary visitor from Lancashire who believes the man who took his daughter has entered the house.
George MacDonald's play moves from talk about art to the difficult business of trusting strangers. In a later scene, Bill tells Thomas that Mattie has often gone hungry and offers to lead him to her. Their meeting is interrupted by James, who accuses Bill of taking a coin. Dialogue and regional speech give the encounters their distinct voices, making the drama a study of family concern, poverty and judgments about honesty.
