About this book

Royal favour carries consequences far beyond the palace in Walter Scott's 1821 historical novel. Set in Elizabeth's England, the story brings the Earl of Leicester and Amy Robsart into a world shaped by personal attachment and political opportunity. Scott's introduction presents the queen as divided between affection for a nobleman and the responsibilities of her position. That tension gives private relationships a public weight, with ambition pressing against the claims of feeling.

In the inn conversation, Michael Lambourne boasts of serving Leicester and uses that connection to command attention. Giles Gosling urges caution about people overhearing, while Lawrence Goldthred hopes a friendship might bring his wares to a powerful customer. Their exchanges turn influence into something felt through drink, clothing, business and intimidating talk. Readers of historical fiction can follow how Scott connects the concerns of a ruler with the calculations of people seeking advantage through her favourite.
