Elizabeth Cady Stanton looks back across eight decades of American life, from a childhood spent among the law books in her father's office to her long years at the front of the women's rights movement. She recalls helping to organize the 1848 Seneca Falls convention, her decades-long partnership with Susan B. Anthony, the raising of seven children, and the many reformers she knew on both sides of the Atlantic. Written with warmth and a sharp sense of humor, the memoir mixes public history with domestic detail, showing how a thinking woman built an argument for equality out of ordinary frustrations.
