About this book
The title page presents explanations of Einstein's work drawn from dialogues with Einstein. The author's preface describes Albert Einstein as a personality whose achievements mark a turning point in the development of science. The account of Mercury's orbit describes exact observation and exact calculation producing a discrepancy, from which an unexplored factor in celestial mechanics was inferred.
Poincaré refused to accept the assumption that the disturbance might be caused by a ring of cosmic matter distributed round the sun. Herschel concluded from optical principles that the number of heavenly bodies must be finite, but the account says that his proof did not establish itself among scientists. Einstein recognizes a definite relationship between knowledge gained at the Patent Office and theoretical results that appeared at the same time as products of intensive thought.
