About this book
The explanation of the Wimshurst machine describes influence machines as mechanically worked electrophori and identifies this machine as the type most generally used in the country under discussion. The machine's construction uses circular plates of varnished glass or ebonite, placed close together and geared to rotate in opposite directions. The collecting apparatus provides insulated metal combs whose inward-pointing teeth approach the plates without touching them.
The account of submarine telegraphy states that the currents used are extremely small, contrary to popular impression. The explanation of an insulated cable compares its accumulation and retention of electricity to a Leyden jar, distinguishing its behaviour from that of bare overhead wire. The discussion of aerial wires warns that a trailing wire may become mixed up with the propeller and appears likely to hamper a small, light machine slightly.
