About this book
Elements of Surgery, by Robert Liston, is presented with numerous engravings and with copious notes and additions by Samuel D. Gross. The discussion of purulent collections describes severe constitutional irritation when discharge is suspended after wounds caused by an accident or an operation.
The account of operations on the iris explains division of the membrane to create an opening sufficient for the transmission of light. The discussion of injury to the upper femur warns that mistakes in diagnosis have too often brought dreadful consequences to the patient. The account says that relying on how force was applied alone may sometimes mislead the diagnosis and that careful manipulation is chiefly to be trusted.
