About this book

Workshop tools and iron furnaces take their place in history through Samuel Smiles's accounts of inventors, mechanics and iron workers. Published in 1863, the collection draws on recollections supplied by colleagues, pupils and families, alongside original documents. The preface explains how information about Henry Maudslay and Joseph Clement was gathered, while the contents introduce experiments in iron smelting, Benjamin Huntsman's work on cast steel and the development of the hot blast.

The discussion of tools connects individual lives with changes in ordinary work. Smiles considers how sharp metal implements helped people build dwellings, make clothing, clear land and construct ships. Hammers, chisels, saws and files become part of an argument about practical skill and the growth of manufacture. Readers interested in the history of engineering can follow both the careers of particular makers and the author's view of why useful invention deserves a place in biography.
