About this book
English Embroidered Bookbindings is by Cyril Davenport and is edited by Alfred Pollard. The contents list a General Introduction by Alfred W. Pollard and a list of plates that includes an Embroidered Bag for Psalms. The text says the English book-trade, making its start under these unfavourable conditions, was exposed at once to the full competition of the Continental presses.
Practically all learned books of every sort, the great majority of our service-books and most grammars for use in English schools, the text says, were produced abroad for the English market and freely imported. The text describes a thread made of a very fine copper wire closely bound round with coloured silk, also very fine. A copy of the Psalms, printed in London in 1643 and bound in satin, bears on each side, within a circle, a miniature portrait worked in feather-stitch.
