About this book
Fine Books by Alfred W. Pollard discusses early English printing and the historical importance of printed books from the fifteenth century. The preface says the book had been ten years in preparation, with much of the writing repeated as the writer's information increased or other researchers made discoveries. The discussion of early presses says even the smallest book fragment from Westminster, Oxford, St. Albans, or the City of London is esteemed as interesting and important.
The account of European printing says Italy rapidly ceased to be its headquarters and yielded that position to France. The discussion of the German printing trade describes a notable decline in the reputation of that trade during the sixteenth century.
