About this book

A river crossing between Semlin and Belgrade opens this account of travel through Ottoman lands and the Middle East. Alexander William Kinglake describes frontier quarantine rules, the anxious preparations for departure, and his first impressions of the porters who meet the boat. An invitation to Moostapha Pasha's residence brings a change of pace, with coffee, pipes and the carefully ordered movements of attendants replacing the bustle of the hotel he has left.

Published in 1844, Eothen combines personal impressions with accounts of local customs and religious life. In the Palestine passage, Kinglake discusses the Easter gathering at the Holy Sepulchre, reports the dangers of an overcrowded ceremony, and considers disputes between Christian communities. Readers interested in older travel writing can follow both his eye for everyday detail and the judgments through which he interprets unfamiliar people and places.
