About this book

Esoteric Christianity, or The Lesser Mysteries, is by Annie Besant. The title page marks it as the second edition and gives London and Benares and the year 1905. An epigraph from S. Clement of Alexandria about the mysteries of knowledge follows the title.

One passage discusses the idea that civilised religion evolved from uncivilised religion, and the author argues that the savages of today are the degenerated offspring of civilised stocks of the past. Another considers the Founder of a religion, who must reach people at every stage of evolution. A passage on sacrifice says the life of Life is in giving, while the life of form is in taking. The index includes entries such as Luther on the Atonement, Madonnas and Man as Microcosm.
