About this book
The Life of St. Teresa of Jesus, of the Order of Our Lady of Carmel is Teresa of Avila's account, written by herself and translated from the Spanish by David Lewis. This is the third enlarged edition, with additional notes and an introduction by Rev. Fr. Benedict Zimmerman, O.C.D. The title page is marked London, with a re-imprimatur dated 27 September 1904. Footnotes are gathered at the ends of chapters, and corrections from the original's corrigenda have been made.
In one passage Teresa writes of warnings and reproaches that she believes come from God, and says some were prophecies of future things that were fulfilled. She says the safest course is to declare the whole state of her soul to a learned confessor and obey him. In another passage she sets out the difference between a trance and a transport: in a trance the soul gradually dies to outward things, losing the senses and living unto God. The notes also discuss the Carmelite constitutions.
