About this book

A novelist's late start gives William Lyon Phelps a way into the relationship between experience and fiction. In this 1910 collection, his opening essay considers William De Morgan's success after sixty and compares the demands of writing novels with those of writing poetry. Phelps pays close attention to how a story begins, how it develops, and how its ending holds together, mixing literary judgments with examples from individual works.

The contents range from Thomas Hardy and Mark Twain to Björnson, Sienkiewicz, and Sudermann. Phelps examines Sudermann's treatment of natural feeling, social convention, loyalty, and remorse. Appendices turn to the place of novels in university study and a teacher's approach to contemporary literature. Readers interested in criticism can use these essays to see which qualities an early twentieth-century professor valued in fiction, and how he connected narrative technique with ideas about human conduct.
