About this book
Henry Weightman Stelwagon's Essentials of Diseases of the Skin is written as questions and answers. It poses questions, such as whether the rapid cure of a skin disease is dangerous to the patient, or which fats are in common use for ointment bases, and a short answer follows each.
The ointment passage names lard, petrolatum, cold cream and lanolin and compares what each is good for. The text is arranged in classes, and Class I covers disorders of the glands, including hyperidrosis, with a figure of a normal sweat-gland. A section on clavus describes the corn as conical, with a dense horny core, and gives treatments such as shaving off the outer part after a hot-water soak and applying a ring of felt or a solution of salicylic acid. A transcriber's note explains that the book uses symbols for quantities such as the dram and the minim, and the prescription sign.
