The account of the protoplast describes a substance resembling egg white that appears structureless without staining and magnification but highly organized when stained and magnified. The description of cell contents identifies crystals, starch, aleurone, oil and alkaloids as substances characteristic of certain cells.
The treatment of crystals distinguishes rectangular forms and polyhedrons, including forms with flat or tapering bases. The microscope instructions require a drop of distilled water or oil over the specimen when using the corresponding immersion objectives.
