About this book
Essentials of Music Theory: Elementary is by Carl E. Gardner. The preface says the primary object in the following pages is to supply the teacher and student with a text book to accompany the work on instrumental or vocal technic. The preface also says brevity and conciseness characterize the volume, which is planned to meet the needs of the busy teacher and student.
The text says the notes are written on the staff, which consists of five horizontal lines together with their spaces, and that the duration of a tone is determined by the note used and the pitch by the note's position on the staff. The text lists the names of notes, among others the whole note or semibreve, the half note or minim, and the quarter note or crotchet. The text explains that c to d is an interval of a second because two letters are comprised.
