About this book
Music by Walter Raymond Spalding is a book on music and composers. One passage explains the Round, in which singers take up a melody in turn, and gives Sumer is icumen in, about 1225, as the earliest specimen, with a reference to a supplement of musical examples. It says the same principle grew into the Canon, the Invention and the Fugue, and compares interwoven polyphonic music with the stone tracery of medieval cathedrals, and names the Flemish cities Cambrai, Tournai, Louvain and Antwerp as renowned in the history of art.
Other passages discuss Chopin, whom the text calls deficient in form in works of large scope such as the Sonatas but a great genius with a fiery soul, and Haydn, whose Quartets the reader is urged to hear and whose Prelude to The Creation is compared to Tristan and Isolde. The transcriber's notes describe links in this e-book for listening to sound files and viewing notation.
