Edmond Hamilton's Evans of the Earth-Guard carries a caption describing a grim black rocket, whirling and dipping with an astounding swiftness, that was endeavoring to bring the twisting little craft into the lines of its guns. Captain Wright Evans answers a radiophone call as Earth-Guard Rocket 283, saying he is standing toward the caller at top speed. The captain cries 'Full speed ahead, Calden!' and says the Hawk is out again and after a one-man rocket not a thousand miles ahead.

The text says the Hawk was coming to have far more of the public sympathy than the Earth-Guard; it was true that he held up defenseless passenger-craft between earth and moon, forcing them under the menace of his guns. The text describes a supreme silence in the pilot-house of the hurtling rocket, the Hawk and Evans facing each other like two statues.
