About this book

The story is told in the first person by Dur Nal, who sits with Jhul Din and Korus Kan in front of the Chief of the Interstellar Patrol. The Chief tells them that something has taken thousands of interstellar ships in a few days and that no clue to its cause has been found. He explains that the cosmic cloud near the galaxy's center, a region of utter darkness billions of miles across, has taken in ships.

He also recalls Zat Zanat, a scientist of the sun of Deneb, who entered the cloud some years ago and never came out. In another passage the narrator makes his way along a narrow street among creatures of the darkness and collides with one of them. In a further scene Zat Zanat laughs, reaches a block at the center of a roof and closes a control-switch, and a deep throbbing starts beneath.
