About this book
Every-Day Errors of Speech is a book by L. P. Meredith, M.D., D.D.S. The introduction says it may be regarded as one of the commendable peculiarities of the English language that, despite provincialisms, vulgarisms, neglected education and foreign accent, it may be understood wherever it is heard.
The author says the book is designed as a collection of the more common errors, chiefly orthoepical, of constant occurrence even among people of education, unless they have paid considerable attention to philology or belles-lettres. The author says the words are given in an alphabetical arrangement, as they are commonly seen in print, with respelling to furnish the correct and incorrect accent and pronunciation. The entries give a word with its pronunciation and what it is not, for example Tapestry as tăp´es-try, not tā´pĕs-try, and Tarpaulin as tär-paw´lin, not tär-pō´lin. One example sentence runs: there is a fabulous report that the upas tree exhales a subtile vapor that is fatal to animal life.
