About this book
A Grammar of Colloquial Chinese, as Exhibited in the Shanghai Dialect is a work by J. Edkins. The preface says that among works on Chinese Grammar, that of Prémare, written a century and a half ago, still stands preeminent. The text says the tones may be partially described according to their natural character, and gives an upper acute tone as one where we pronounce monosyllabic words, when speaking with moderate emphasis, in a quick descending tone.
A note on the compounded forms says there is an advantage to the foreigner in using them, because a mispronunciation of the tone of a single word is nearly compensated by the repetition of the idea. The text speaks of a division into two heads, treating of grammatical (or syntactical), and prosodial (or rhythmical) relations respectively.
