About this book
Everybody's Guide to Money Matters is by William Cotton, and its pages deal with money. The text gives the form of the expression for sums of money as pounds, shillings, and pence. The Bank note is introduced as another form of money, if it may be so termed, and is called simply a promise to pay, on demand. The text states that the Bank of England is the oldest joint-stock bank in the country.
A section headed COLONIAL AND FOREIGN CORPORATION STOCKS says the loans are mostly represented by bonds, to which coupons are attached for interest, and are repayable at a certain specified date. On deposits, the text says interest is allowed on ordinary deposits and added to the principal. The text sets a limit on interest, saying that when the deposit is raised to above £200, interest is allowed on £200 only.
