About this book

A torn kite brings Everychild to his father for help, but it is the family cook who kneels beside him and begins the repair. While she works, the room brightens, music sounds, and two mysterious visitors appear. Louis Dodge begins this children's fantasy with a child's need for attention, then opens a world populated by familiar figures from fairy tales and nursery rhymes, including Aladdin, Hansel and Grettel, and Cinderella.

The story gives everyday fears and family troubles a place among its wonders. Everychild encounters the giant Fear, and later listens to the children of the Old Woman as they describe scant suppers and harsh treatment. His questions bring sympathy into scenes that familiar rhymes can make seem ordinary. For readers interested in retellings, the appeal lies in seeing recognizable storybook households through a child's concern for the people living in them.
