About this book
The book is titled Fables for the Times and names Henry Wallace Phillips as its author. The contents list, among others, gives the titles "The Baa-Sheep and the Lion", "The Dog and the Meat" and "The Fox and the Grapes". In the fable headed "The Baa-Sheep and the Lion", a baa-sheep lying under the paw of a black-maned lion asks whether the lion will sing a little selection from Wagner before the sheep dies.
In "The Dog and the Meat", a dog with a piece of meat in his mouth is crossing a bridge over a placid stream and sees another dog with a precisely similar piece of meat in the water below him. In one fable, a man in the archway of an ancient temple cries "Oh, great is art!" in a frenzy, and after an earthquake he meets a lion who had lost his tail and his temper. One fable carries the line "IMMORAL: Hysterics and Art are only relations by marriage."
