About this book

A possible open sea around the North Pole sends Captain Harvey and the brig Hope north from England. Equipped for whaling but chiefly bound on discovery, the ship heads toward Greenland and Baffin's Bay. R. M. Ballantyne's 1863 adventure for young readers begins with a departure that weighs heavily on both the captain and the sailor Sam Baker, bringing family attachments into the story of exploration.

Arctic conditions soon make practical resourcefulness central to the narrative. The middle passage considers using kites to pull sledges, describes the moon circling above the horizon, and follows Gregory, Baker and Davy Butts across thin ice in search of walrus. Their approach pauses as they watch a polar hunter moving toward the animals. Readers interested in sea stories and survival fiction will find close attention to equipment, ice, wildlife and the men's responses to unfamiliar conditions.
