About this book

The World of Ice is by R. M. Ballantyne. The contents list gives, among other things, a pirate, a terrible fight and its consequences, Buzzby's helm lashed amidships and a whaling-cruise begun. The text has a man leap on the hammock-nettings, put a trumpet to his mouth and sing out lustily, "Ship ahoy! where are you from, and what's your cargo?" The text says that Captain Ellice made no reply, but ordered four of his men on deck to point one of the stern-chasers.

O'Riley replies that in all cases o' danger, when ye don't need to be afeard, you needn't much care, and calls that a good chart to steer by. Fred says "Ah, father, yonder stands one stone, at least, that calls forth feelings of sorrow", and points to Store Island, where the men had raised a large stone over the grave of Joseph West.
