About this book
Fifty Bab Ballads carries the subtitle Much Sound and Little Sense and includes illustrations by the author. The preface says the ballads originally appeared in Fun during the editorship of the late Tom Hood and were subsequently republished in two volumes. The preface describes many of the ballads as hastily composed under the necessity of producing a quantity of lively verse by a certain day every week.
A friend tells Mr. Hooper that Hopley Porter, a curate at Assesmilk-cum-Worter, has a mind even blanker than his own. The Reverend Hopley Porter welcomes the prospect of dancing in his leisure hours, smoking, scenting himself and playing croquêt.
