About this book
Why They Married has text and illustrations by James Montgomery Flagg. A dedication offers the book to several obliging married couples who have posed for some of these portraits. A verse says not to be ashamed to let us know why you tried matrimony, for others brave the under-tow for reasons quite as funny.
A verse headed She Kept Her Word says that Maud hung onto straps in the Subway and L, that no man ever said take my seat, and that she swore she would marry the first one who did. A verse headed How Was She to Know? says sweet Alice got married to-day without the faintest idea that the gent had another wife over in Flushing. A verse headed A Tonic says Miss Luella Gloaming, naturally glum, married young Grouch, the recluse, and that when she is sad she looks at his face and can't help but laugh. A list of headings includes Labor Saving, Matter of Fact and Newport News, among others.
