Old Picture Books, With Other Essays on Bookish Subjects is by Alfred W. Pollard. A letter addressed to John Macfarlane, Librarian of the Imperial Library, Calcutta, says its recipient was whirled away to India to organise a great library at Calcutta. The text says that of contemporary illustrations the lack remains grievous and irreparable, and that in England there is nothing at all for the Miracle Plays.
The text says that for the moralities by which they were superseded, the only manuscript illustration is a picture of the castle in the Castle of Perseverance. The text says the use of gold reached this country but slowly, as the first known English binding in which it occurs is on a book printed in 1541. A household account records further expenses noted down as extraordinary that soon cease to be looked upon as anything but ordinary.
