About this book
Finished is by H. Rider Haggard, and its contents list chapters titled Allan Quatermain Meets Anscombe, A Game of Cards and Isandhlwana. A letter headed Ditchingham House, Norfolk, May, 1917, opens My dear Roosevelt and says, “You are, I know, a lover of old Allan Quatermain.” The narrator pushes on ahead to reconnoitre, fearing lest there might be Basutos hidden in this cover, in a patch of Yellow-wood forest where the cart must travel very slowly.
At the stream where the wagon should be, the freshness of the trail shows it had gone within an hour or two. The narrator hears continuous firing and mentions Rorke's Drift, lying still and listening on a cloudy, moonless night. Anscombe only laughed and said that, as the narrator had got the things, the narrator had better keep them until something happened.
