About this book

Trading plans take Allan Quatermain toward King Panda's royal settlement in Zululand, through a country troubled by rival claims and personal grievances. H. Rider Haggard's 1913 historical adventure links the contest between Panda's sons, Cetewayo and Umbelazi, with the strained relationships surrounding Mameena. Her father Umbezi describes a household caught between an unhappy marriage, a disappointed suitor and his own attempts to arrange his daughter's future.

The narrative moves from animated conversation to wagon travel over difficult ground. A stop for water brings Quatermain back to the imposing Black Kloof, where memories of Zikali's ominous predictions trouble him. Haggard's introductory note connects the royal rivalry with accounts of events in 1856, while the story gives those tensions a personal scale through bargaining, marriage and divided loyalties. Readers interested in historical adventure can find a first-person account of political unrest, shaped by its narrator's judgments and the author's period assumptions.
