About this book

The Firebrand is by S. R. Crockett, and its contents list names chapters called The Making of an Outlaw, The Man Without a Friend and Cock o' the North, among others. A man called El Sarria laughs grimly, his eye still true and his rifle good as ever. Ramon waits till the mist is at its thickest, and he strikes out straight for the cave on the face of the Montblanch from which the bullets had come.

La Giralda stands a moment before laying her burden down, with the strong heart of her ancient people. A plot edged with white stones from the hillside has a rose-bush in the midst that had been broken down by some hasty human foot, or perhaps by a bullock or other large trespassing animal. A speaker says, I cannot leave this man to think me a mere common traitor, and adds, I have failed in my mission.
