About this book
The preface calls the volume far from a scientific treatise on flowers and flower-gardens, and says it is mere gossip in print upon a pleasant subject. The title page adds an appendix of practical instructions and useful information respecting the flower-garden, and gives Calcutta. The text says there are in England two thousand varieties of the rose alone.
The text says the Hindoos believe that the Peepul tree, of which the foliage trembles like that of the aspen, has a spirit in every leaf. The artist Blake is quoted asking, Did you ever see a fairy's funeral, Madam? The text mentions a projected railway whose stages ran in an ominous line across the very lawn and before the windows of Elleray.
