About this book
Our Village by Mary Russell Mitford includes an introduction by Anne Thackeray Ritchie, who writes on hearsay only, and without having ever known or ever seen the author. The text says that in 1806 Dr. Mitford takes his daughter, who was then about nineteen, to the North to visit his relations, and that they fish in Sir John Swinburne's lake and visit at Alnwick Castle.
The text follows a walk through winding lanes, between hedgerows tenderly green, to a hatch-gate with a white cottage beside it embosomed in fruit-trees, which forms the entrance to the Pinge. The text says that since the adventure of the lamb Saladin has had an affair with a gander, furious in defence of his goslings, in which rencontre the gander came off conqueror. Watch is renowned for keeping a flock together better than any shepherd's dog, and like other sheep dogs is accustomed to live chiefly on bread and beer.
