About this book

A Letter to a Hindu is subtitled The Subjection of India, Its Cause and Cure. The book prints a translation of a letter that Leo Tolstoy wrote in Russian in reply to one from the Editor of Free Hindustan. M. K. Gandhi supplies an introduction explaining how the letter reached him and how he told a friend he would translate it into Gujarati and encourage others to translate it into other Indian languages.

Gandhi's introduction describes Tolstoy's teaching as non-resistance to evil and the meeting of hatred with love. In one quoted passage the advice is not to resist evil but also not to take part in it, including the collection of taxes and the work of soldiers. Another passage quotes lines attributed to Krishna, and the letter also discusses justifications that are termed scientific. The letter itself is divided into seven numbered parts.
