About this book

At an Arizona ranch in fierce summer heat, a military paymaster wants to move his safe and escort toward Camp Stoneman. Sergeant Feeny sees trouble in the delay: several soldiers have gone back along the trail, and he suspects that a report about frightened women has drawn them away from their duty. Charles King's frontier novel begins with this argument over judgment, money and the risks of traveling through dangerous country.

Lieutenant Drummond and his cavalry later track an ambulance carrying stolen funds through a winding desert canyon. Finding water for the horses and reading tracks become as important as keeping up the chase. Meanwhile, the leader of the outlaws understands that the unopened safe helps hold his followers together. Readers interested in military adventure will find practical details of movement, command and pursuit woven into a story of divided loyalties.

About the author

Charles King

This is the soldier rather than the Georgetown historian who shares his name. King went to West Point, was wounded in Arizona during the Apache campaigns in 1874, served again in Cuba and the Philippines, and was in uniform across five wars and six decades, retiring as a brigadier general.
