About this book

Exhausted on a southern Utah trail, John Hare depends on the kindness of August Naab, a Mormon settler who chooses to help him despite approaching outlaws. Hare has come west for his health, but a cattle company job has drawn accusations that he is a spy. Naab and his family offer food and care in a desert where suspicion can quickly become a threat. Zane Grey places this opening crisis among sage bushes, red cliffs and a camp gathered for evening prayer.

Published in 1910, the novel ties frontier adventure to the practical importance of water and grazing land. A later encounter brings Hare to a busy ranch after he finds a spring fenced against Naab's cattle. His conversation with the foreman exposes tensions over how ranch business is conducted. For readers drawn to Western fiction, the book combines closely described desert country with conflicts over trust, property and the obligations of hospitality.
