About this book
The full heading is Folk Lore: or, Superstitious Beliefs in the West of Scotland Within This Century, by James Napier. The heading also gives an appendix shewing the probable relation of the modern festivals of Christmas, May Day, St. John's Day, and Hallowe'en, to ancient sun and fire worship. The contents list includes sections on Birth and Childhood, Marriage, Death, Witchcraft, Second Sight, and the Black Art, Charms and Counter Charms, Divining, and Superstitions Relating to Animals.
The text quotes George Smith, the eminent Assyriologist, as saying that upwards of 2000 years B.C. the Babylonians had three great gods, Anu, Bel, and Hea. The text tells of a daughter of a French officer who was so tormented by a paronychia for four days together that the pain kept her from sleeping, and who, by the order of a medical man, put her finger into a cat's ear and within two hours was delivered from her pain.
