About this book
The Folk-lore of Plants is by T. F. Thiselton-Dyer. The preface describes the volume as a brief systematic summary of the many branches into which the subject naturally subdivides itself. The preface hopes the work will serve as a useful handbook for those desirous of gaining some information, in a brief concise form, about the folk-lore that has clustered round the vegetable kingdom.
The text reports that among the Virginian tribes red clover was supposed to have sprung from and to be coloured by the blood of the red men slain in battle. A report says lilies of the valley sprang from the blood of St. Leonard, and that wherever his blood was shed there sprang up lilies of the valley in profusion. According to the text, angelica was in olden times used as an antidote for poisons, and agrimony, too, was once in repute for sore throats, cancers, and ulcers.
