About this book

Demonologia; or, Natural Knowledge Revealed is described on its title page as an exposé of ancient and modern superstitions, credulity, fanaticism, enthusiasm and imposture. The title page lists the subjects covered, from amulets, apparitions and astrology to dreams, ghosts, magic, miracles, oracles, spells and witchcraft.

In one passage the author turns to the history of the potato and recalls that Louis XV wore a bunch of its flowers at court, after which the people acknowledged its use. Another passage says witches no longer untie the winds and ghosts are jammed hard and fast in the Red Sea. A passage on horoscopes says Dryden cast the nativities of his sons, and that in 1670 the passion for expounding the stars prevailed among the first rank in France.
