About this book

A tortoise, a food-giving drum and quarrelling animals connect ordinary needs with magical rules in Elphinstone Dayrell's collection of folk stories from southern Nigeria. Published in 1910, the book includes tales explaining why bats fly at night, why the sun and moon live in the sky, and how animals acquired familiar habits. Its contents move between courtship, bargaining, jealousy and accounts of the natural world, with rulers and human families appearing alongside speaking creatures.

In one passage, a feast brings the brothers Ekpo and Etim into a dispute over Ekpo's pet cock. Ama Ukwa carries false messages between them, turning a small incident into fighting between towns. Andrew Lang's introduction compares the stories with European and other traditions, while also expressing cultural judgments characteristic of its period. Readers interested in folklore can trace the recurring animal characters and explanatory tales, and consider how the introduction interprets the stories it presents.
