About this book
Four Mystery Plays carries the heading The Portal of Initiation and a summary of scenes. The English editor says the general public has never been admitted to the performance of these plays, and has ventured to give some indication of the costumes and scenery. The summary of scenes lists, among others, a debating room with Theodora's vision of the coming Christ, and Johannes' meditation among the mountains. The summary of scenes lists a subterranean rock temple and the consultation of the hierophants, among other scenes.
A character named Philia says that the science won by stern sobriety and intellect does not suffice for the soul, which needs a steadfast faith in its own self. A character named Strader says he grew up among pious folk, was trained in a cloister with monks as his teachers, and felt the deepest longing to be a monk. A character named Fox says that Thomasius, who came some years ago beneath the influence of a spirit-stream, has learned just how to use such forms of thought as in our time compel men's confidence.
