About this book
Franklin's Autobiography is edited by O. Leon Reid and includes an introduction that sets the year of Franklin's birth, 1706, against the world of the time: Queen Anne on the English throne, Swift and Defoe writing pamphlets, ten colonies in America, and no stage coaches, only a bridle path from New York to Philadelphia.
In the memoir itself the writer admits that gratifying his own vanity may be one reason for writing, thanks God for his past happiness, and reports from notes given him by an uncle that the family had lived in the village of Ecton in Northamptonshire for three hundred years. Another passage cautions young printers not to print scurrilous reflections, and tells of sending a journeyman with a press to Charleston, South Carolina, in 1733, under a partnership for one third of the profits. A further passage quotes the sayings of Poor Richard on time, sloth and the used key that is always bright.
