About this book

Fanny Stenhouse writes from the point at which religious dissent has altered both her family life and her livelihood in Salt Lake City. Published in 1875, this autobiographical account presents her experience of Mormonism alongside an argument against plural marriage. Her preface traces the encouragement that led her to write, including a stay in New York prolonged by a railway snow blockade and the reception of an earlier pamphlet on Utah.

The account links household pressures with the authority claimed by religious leaders. In the middle excerpt, Stenhouse challenges teachings about loyalty, forgiveness and punishment, supporting her criticism with an exchange involving a bishop and a woman whose faith has shifted. Readers interested in women's testimony and American religious history will find a forceful personal perspective on the costs of dissent and the relationship between belief, marriage and institutional power.
