About this book

Andrew Carnegie recalls a childhood in Dunfermline through family stories, his father's weaving trade and the voices of relatives and neighbours. His autobiography follows a life that moves from Scotland to America, then through work in Pittsburgh, telegraphy, railroads and the iron and steel industries. The 1920 volume was arranged for publication by John C. Van Dyke, whose editorial note explains that he preserved Carnegie's own manner of telling the story.

Business growth appears through accounts of particular people rather than figures alone. Carnegie describes mill workers and clerks becoming partners, debates over entering the steel trade and his belief in rewarding exceptional service. The contents extend to labour disputes, educational funds and efforts for peace.

About the author

Andrew Carnegie

Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) was a Scottish-American industrialist who built the largest steel enterprise in the United States and became one of the wealthiest men of his era. After selling Carnegie Steel in 1901, he turned to philanthropy and writing, funding thousands of public libraries and endowing institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.
