About this book
The preface says several articles concern the history of mysticism, calling that aspect of human nature a subject deserving careful and close study. The preface describes mysticism as a spiritual element that cannot be ignored or wholly suppressed, capable of regulation but potentially mischievous when left unregulated.
The account of Margaretta describes her remaining in a room with her sister Elizabeth, with the shutters closed, reading the Bible, meditating, praying and writing letters. The complaints brought before the magistrates accuse monks and nuns of practising trades to the disadvantage of artisans and demand broken looms, restrictions on work and distribution of surplus goods among the poor.
